The gaming-centered design is really clear in the touchpad area of this laptop. The touchpad is to the far right corner and it’s matched with a set of 10 soft-keys that are customizable for specific games and tasks.
The new Razer Blade’s touchpad and 10 soft-keys come from the conceptual href="http://www.razerzone.com/switchblade" target="_blank">Switchblade netbook that Razer showcased at CES 2010. Razor’s new Blade will make use of what Razer now calls the Switchblade UI (User Interface) for the touchpad and 10 customizable keys that carried over is the customizable keyboard keys. On the Blade the touchpad sits to the right of the keyboard with a set of ten soft-keys above it and left-right buttons beneath it.
According to Razer game makers href="http://www.battlefield3online.com/battlefield-3-news-announcements/1813-battlefield-3-will-support-razer-blade-laptop-switchblade-ui.html" target="_blank">Electronic Arts and href="http://press.razerzone.com/press/detail/press-releases/shanda-games-to-optimize-games-for-razer-switchblade-ui" target="_blank">Shanda Games will be adding Switchblade UI support to some of their games; EA will add support in Battlefield 3; Shanda games will add support to Legend of Immortal, Dragon Nest, and World of Legend.
However other than the special keyboard and touchpad Razer is still offering a complete gaming laptop with the Blade. The specifications for the Blade are as follows:
- 2.8GHz Intel® Core i7 2640M Processor
- 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Memory
- 17.3-inch LED Backlit Display (1920×1080)
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M with NVIDIA® Optimus Technology
- 2GB Dedicated GDDR5 Video Memory
- Built-in HD Webcam
- Integrated 60Wh Battery (non-user-removable)
- 320GB 7200rpm SATA HDD
- Wireless Network 802.11 b/g/n Compatible
- 16.81″ (Width) x 10.9″ (Depth) x 0.88″ (Height); 6.97lbs (Weight)
Razer will be charging ,799.95 for the Blade in North America during the Q4 2011 time period.
With those specifications and that price the Blade isn’t that attractive, is the unique keyboard and touchpad worth the extra money you’ll spend on the Blade over buying a better equipped (CPU, GPU and HDD wise) ASUS or Clevo gaming laptop? The Razer Blade laptop is also thinner than any other gaming laptop, even though it weights almost 7lbs. it’s still a bit more portable than most other gaming laptops. Is portability going to justify the large price tag for you?
