Battery Life:

ASUS G50Vt-A2

ASUS G50Vt-A2

Unfortunately just like most asus laptops larger then 14″ this one also suffers from lower then desirable battery life.  expect 2 hours of battery life tops.  If you disable the lights, Bluetooth, vga card and kill some of the ports in device manager you may be able to get 3 hours.  Just barely finishes a full length blu-ray movie.  Anything over casual typing or playing a movie expect lower then an hour of life.  Asus does offer a 9cell extended battery for the g50.  This would stick out about an inch from the rear and would get roughly an extra 1-1.5 hours of use.

Cool Features:

This one has a few cool features built in.  The secondary display above the keyboard can be programmed to show any number of widgets like instant messages, cpu usage, battery life and with a bit of programming anything else you can imagine.  Asus does include software to control what appears on the 2nd display.  This also comes with splashtop operating system.  This is a simple version that allows the unit to fully boot in under 10 seconds with access to internet, email, music and more.  The panel above the keyboard has all the fast function touch buttons.  No pressing required as these are touch sensitive.  The palm rests are made out of honey comb design abs plastic which stays cool while you use it.  HDMI and Bluetooth is always a standard on asus notebooks.  The ports on the left and right side are covered by red magnetic panels to give the laptop a more “refined” appearance.  If the lights on the laptop don’t make you dizzy maybe the spaceship mouse asus bundled will.

Keyboard:

This keyboard does have the full num pad on the right side.  This is also a spill proof keyboard for someone with butter fingers.  I would rate this keyboard B quality only because I have not spent enough time on it.  It feels solid, there is little to no flex and it shares the same keyboard from various asus models which have not had any complaints over the years.

The mouse pad is attractive with the blue illumination all around it. It has good sensitivity but not so much that you get unwanted movement of the mouse. As for the button it will take me a little bit to get use to them you really have to “click” down to get a response. Looking at the positive side they should stay firm for years to come.

Size & Weight:

The notebook is NOT a 15.4” (the screen is) the width is just slightly less than a 17” which allows for an almost full size keyboard (see pics with tape measure view). Don’t expect to use any 15” bag or sleeve… I went to several computer stores and searched online but I could not find any that would fit other than the one made for 17’. It fit in the current 15.4″ bag I had but not in the protected sleeve where it’s intended to go for maximum protection. I finally gave up and had a custom made sleeve to protect my new toy.

Screen:

The screen is very bright and produces some of the most vivid colors I have seen in a while. The text is clear and crisp at all resolutions.

This gaming laptop comes with a high quality 15.4″ LCD with 1680X1050 native resolution.  I rate this A quality for its brilliance, wide view angles and vivid colors.  Asus has been integrating very good quality displays in all their gaming targeted models.  For those who are worried about dead or sub pixels, have no fear asus warranties against such defects with all their notebooks.

OS:

Let’s just say don’t like the 64 bit so much… it is a pain to get software to work and find appropriate drivers. I don’t care one way or another for the new Vista interface, its fine. However finding software, drivers or just getting software that works with 64bit is a pain or impossible. I work in finance and real estate and I would have to stop using about 15% of the software I currently use and have to buy newer version of another 10%. (Most Adobe, GSP Serial Emulator, and may other industry specific packages all fail to install or were unstable)

I will be looking to do a dual boot or completely replace 64 to vista 32 or maybe back to XP. Maybe when the rest of the software community catches up I will feel differently.

Package contents:

Asus Targus premium Backpack, Asus mouse, recovery disks, drivers, power supply, battery, manual, alone in the dark game
Despite having so many features and being considered a solid product, there are a few very glaring drawbacks in the G50 A2. The first and foremost and infact the most critical of them is the battery run time. The battery life or run time is very poor in this machine, with an average of approximately just a few minutes over an hour. Battery life is one of the most critical and major deciding factors of the notebooks. The G50 A2 fails miserably in this aspect and makes the entire package a very disappointing and less user friendly. Reference to this aspect, this machine is not for the users who are always on the move and have to use the note book a lot while travelling.
Apart from the battery life, the weight is also a point of concern with this note book, apart from being bigger in size this note book is big on weight as well and becomes uncomfortable to carry around by users who need to travel a lot or female users for whom carrying around heavy weighed machines becomes a cause of concern.

The gaming laptop is a bit larger than standard 15.4″ laptops, but it comes with a backpack that is actually nice and works very well (looks snazzy too). It needs a little use at first to stretch it out but works great after that!
Pros:

Excellent for the gamer on a budget
Nice lighting effects
Great High resolution display
Cool and low noise

Cons:

No TV-Tuner
Hard to remove keyboard
Heavy and bulky
